The first portion of a serial comic/graphic novel about my first job out of college—the name “Uncle Scam’s” is actually what we used to call the place. It was an Army/Navy surplus store run by Canadian criminals in a half abandoned part of Buffalo called the Larkin District.
You should be able to click each panel and zoom in to read (crt + works too if you have a PC). I also included a bonus page from the first panel/page of Uncle Scam’s part 2 (which admittedly I thought would be done by now...jokes on me). This comic is too large to entirely fit into email (for those who read my posts via email) so read it all directly on substack or the app.
Also yes…I’m procrastinating on around 4 deadlines which is totally why I’m dawdling on substack instead of drawing or editing things…So here enjoy Uncle Scam’s Army Navy Surplus. I’m trying to release new portions of it through this website in the future anyway:
If you are interested in purchasing any comics (not that I’m trying to make this a marketing vehicle…) see hyperlinks below.
my first comic which is more journalism focused. All interviews and drawings were done over the first 6 months of the pandemic and it is directly modeled after Studs Terkel’s interview based book about jobs titled “Working.” The entire book was edited by Evan Lowry my partner but don’t tell him I gave him credit—he hates that, he even had me edit him out of a contributions section. Anyway, the book can be found here (sorry it’s Amazon).
The other two comics I have can be found on my square store:
Uncle Scam’s Army Navy Surplus Part 1 (the comic above but a physical copy—with large drawings all done in the same scale I drew them in 9 by 12 inches)
The Ides of March (Also large—9 by 12 inches its about March 15th 2020 I made it as a goodbye gift for Seattle friends and as a contribution to an art and literary journal)
